16 The Lord is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. 17 O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear 18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

A few months ago, I stayed at a friend’s house in Orange County. I was there on business over a weekend so opted to go to a church nearby. Being the PCA guy that I am, I found Redeemer OC. Funny enough, the pastor and I had a beers together with some others a couple years ago at a General Assembly!

I discovered that they published a daily Scripture reading online from the Book of Common Prayer. Like most people (except maybe the most stalwart of saints), I have a terrible time reading Scripture regularly. I’ll get up in the morning, and work will be looking at me. I’ll go bed at night and be way too tired to focus on anything.

I tried their Scripture reading. Unlike anything else I’ve tried in the past, I’ve been more regular with this than anything else. I usually read it on my phone so the biggest distraction is swiping over to news or social media. But, this has really been working for me so I greatly appreciate it.

I try to read in the morning when I’m far fresher and my attention is focused. I tend to pick up more things. Something I’ve noticed and have come to appreciate is the amount of time spent in the Psalms (I’m sure there’s a philosophy behind this, but I haven’t looked up the BCP’s history yet). I find myself increasing encouraged by what I read.

Today’s passage is a perfect example as we continue to hear about the horrors that IS is committing. Or even close by as we have friends and family that are afflicted and oppressed to varying degrees by different things.

It’s encouraging to hear the promises of God and the prayers for others.
